Weevils are coming to Warsaw.
The president of the Center Lake Conservation Association, William Hilliard, will release these little beetles into Center Lake behind his home at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to fight the Eurasian Water Milfoil problem.
EWM is a rapidly spreading freshwater weed that grows rampant, interfering with the growth of other native plants, recreational activities, wildlife habitat and facilities with water systems. EWM is the only food that weevils eat and they have already been successfully introduced in other Indiana lakes like Griffy lake in Bloomington, Pretty Lake in LaGrange County and Round Lake in Whitely County.
"Our hope is by putting this (weevils) in the lake, it will help solve some of our weed problems," said Hilliard.
