The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana issued a tornado warning for the area Saturday morning after the new Doppler radar indicated a possible tornado.
Reports at 8:35 a.m. indicated "a tornado seven miles northwest of Warsaw or five miles west southwest of Leesburg, moving northeast at 55 mph." Locations in the path of the tornado were listed as Leesburg, Oswego, Milford and Syracuse.
A later report at 8:44 a.m. indicated a tornado 10 miles northeast of Warsaw or one mile north of North Webster, moving east northeast at 50 mph.
Mike Sabones, meterologist in charge of the station, said it was the first severe weather event the station outside North Webster handled. "I was quite pleased with the way it worked," Sabones said.
He said the weather service issues warnings when the radar indicates there are strong winds inside a storm.
"A tornado warning means a high probability ... people should take action," Sabones said. "We don't take a warning lightly."
Sabones said no one has reported seeing actual funnel clouds in Kosciusko County, but there was tree damage reported along Armstrong Road.
Sabones said the storms that hit Kosciusko County were interesting because they usually hit in the afternoon or evening when there is more heat and energy. He said it was surprising that the storms occurred in the morning.
