LEESBURG – A North Webster man was in serious condition Friday after suffering injuries in a two-vehicle accident. Leesburg/Plain Township Fire Department officials extricated Gregory A. Smith, 77, North Webster, from a Ford F-150 pickup truck he was driving. Smith was immediately transported to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, in serious condition due to a severe head laceration. The driver of the second vehicle was identified as Randall W. Shepherd, 27, Warsaw, who had been operating a Ford Explorer at the time of the crash. Shepherd refused medical treatment at the scene, according to investigating officers. According to a press release from Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Dept., deputies and emergency personnel responded Friday to the reported head-on vehicular crash near Leesburg. Officers and rescue personnel arrived at the intersection of Armstrong Road and CR 200E at approximately 3:35 p.m. after receiving a 911 call of a two-vehicle collision. Initial investigative information provided to sheriff’s deputies at the scene determined that Shepherd had been westbound on Armstrong Road, approaching the intersection of CR 200E. Shepherd advised officers that a vehicle directly in front of his Ford Explorer, suddenly stopped in the roadway. Shepherd purportedly swerved to his left, crossing the centerline, and impacted the Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on that was being driven eastbound on Armstrong Road by Smith. KCSD deputies were assisted at the scene by Multi-Township EMS, Leesburg/Plain Township Fire Department and the Winona Lake Police Department.
