NORTH WEBSTER - Utilities superintendent Jeremy Sponseller reported to the council that the light on Hickory Street is installed, and the tree trimming in the north section of town is complete.
The remaining areas for trimming will be addressed this week.
Sponseller added that the town is picking up brush piles that are placed along the street.
One bid was received for fencing of the area around the new recycling venue. The bid is much higher than the town is able to afford. Sponseller will continue to look at other bids and explore further options.
The town will trim the trees in and around the recycling area to make it easier to use the new center.
The deadline for paving bids is Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. At that time the sealed bids will be opened at the town hall.
Town Marshal Greg Church reported the town's police activity, which included 80 traffic violations during "Operation Pull-Over."
Church asked that the council consider his request for the replacement of the light bars on the three squad cars. Each bar is $1,600 and is equipped with the new halogen bulbs.
The new bulbs require less draw on the vehicle's alternators, which have been replaced several times. The town approved the request for one bar in 2007, and the remaining two for 2008.
The town received a signed contract from Holts, Sheets and Associates, and now is participating in the program.
The contract will provide a percentage of split in fees charged by Holts to insurance companies that purchase accident reports. If the town did not agree to the contract the fees charged by Holts would be the same, the town just would not get their portion.
Tim Hine of the Parks Department requested the appointment of John Brown to the Parks board. Brown will replace Lydia Stech, who is no longer in the area. Board approved the appointment, and welcomed Brown.
Anderson Lawn Care won the bid for installation of the irrigation system at the park. Anderson was one of three companies competing for the bid.
New business owner, Mike Albertson, informed the board that he will open a service shop for Harley Davidson motorcycles adjacent to the Harley sales shop on Ind. 13. President John Sroufe welcomed Albertson and wished him success.
Council approved Jack Boyer's request for rezoning his property from residential to commercial.
The town will advertise for trash removal bids. Deadline for the bidding will be Oct. 16, which is the next scheduled town meeting. Bids will be opened at that time.
Sroufe would like to solicit the community for thoughts and input on the burning of leaves. Sroufe proposed that the town allow 2 weeks of permissible burning during the year. One week in the spring and one in the fall. Sroufe is curious if the town would be interested in a "cleanup" week. He asked that thoughts and ideas be sent to the clerk's office at P.O. Box 95, North Webster, 46555. Currently the town has a no burn ordinance.
Jake Rhodes, from the Lion's club, invited the community to the Annual Northern Lakes Traditional Pow Wow, September 22-23. The Pow Wow is a celebration of Native American heritage and culture. The event will be at the Mermaid Festival Grounds.
Halloween hours are set for Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in the community center.
