Webster Considering Sidewalk Construction

Posted
NORTH WEBSTER – Sidewalks from Ace Hardware to the post office and to North Webster Elementary could be coming to town sometime in the future.

Town council member Dan Thystrup said he has spoken to several state and local politicians to get tips for a future project.

Council members Lisa Strombeck and David Waliczek agreed sidewalks in these areas would be a positive for the town.

Students are not permitted to walk to the elementary school because of safety reasons, but Police Chief Greg Church said if they got a sidewalk, the school would have to supply a crossing guard.

Thystrup said it would not cost “a lot extra” to do the bike trails as well. He said he will keep gathering information, and will keep the council apprised of what he learns.

Also during the meeting, the council decided not to join the Kosciusko Economic Development Corp.

Alan Tio from KEDCo spoke to the council at its July meeting, explaining the benefits the town could gain by joining the organization.

Clerk-treasurer Betsy Luce said it would cost the town $6,000 to join, though she and Strombeck weren’t clear if that was an annual amount. Luce said the town hasn’t been a member since 2008.

Waliczek said he was going to vote “no” if the matter came up, and Thystrup agreed. “My company is a member of it, and we haven’t gotten any good out of it.”

In other business:

• Trick-or-treat hours were set for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

• Utilities superintendent Jayne Alger reported she was going to Fort Wayne today to pick up lab and safety awards given to the town. She said North Webster scored 99 percent in both areas.

The next council meeting will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 17.
