NORTH WEBSTER - The town authorized a grant application to the tune of half a million dollars Tuesday to refurbish the former elementary school building.

Enough town and Tippecanoe Township residents returned income survey cards to show 54.6 percent of households and 51.2 percent of the individuals earning low to moderate incomes, according to Bob Murphy of R.P. Murphy and Associates, Larwill. Murphy is serving as grant administrator.

The application, due in Indianapolis Friday by 5 p.m. will be submitted to the Indiana Department of Commerce's Community Development Block Grant Funds program. Awards will be announced in November. If awarded, the funds should be available in February.

The town will serve as administrative agency for the North Webster Community Center Inc. The organization is responsible for matching the $500,000. None of the grant monies will be spent on the town offices' relocation into the building.

Monies will go toward such permanent items as heating and air conditioning in the most modern areas of the building. The funds also can pay for permanent furniture and handicapped accessibility. The "old" part of the facility will be sealed off from the public for the time being.

Town council members present were Kay Andrews and Jeff Morgan. Ken Wagoner was absent.
