Webster Accepting Mermaid Queen, Cutie Applications

NORTH WEBSTER - Applications are being accepted for the 64th annual Mermaid Festival Queen of Lakes Pageant and Cutie Contest.

The theme for this year's event is "Country Music Time."

One of the highlights of the festival is the Queen of Lakes Pageant. The pageant has all the elements of those shown on television, including swimsuit and evening gown competition. The pageant is open to girls ages 16-23.

An organizational meeting for candidates will be at 10 a.m. June 13 at the North Webster Community Center on Ind. 13, with entrance at the back of the building.

Applications for the Queen of Lakes Pageant must be received no later than June 13 for participation in the pageant. The applications and rules can be printed from the North Webster Lions Club Web site at www.northwebsterlions.com or by calling the Mermaid Festival Headquarters at 574-834-4316. Various local businesses also have applications.

The Queen of Lakes Pageant will be June 20 at the North Webster Community Center starting at 9 a.m. All contestants must participate in the Mermaid Festival parade at 4 p.m. and then participate in the Queen of Lakes Pageant at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium of the North Webster Community Center.

The Shoop Sports and Youth Foundation Inc will provide scholarships totaling $5,000 that will be awarded to the Queen of Lakes and her court. The Lioness Club will provide a $100 Community Service Award. Parade prizes awarded by the Shoop Sports and Youth Foundation Inc. will total $1,500.

Another annual favorite is the Mermaid Festival Cutie Contest. The pageant is open to girls and boys between the ages of 4 and 6 as of June 1.

Applications for the Cutie King & Queen Pageant must be received no later than June 10 for participation in the pageant. The applications and rules can be printed from the North Webster Lions Club Web site at www.northwebsterlions.com or by calling the Mermaid Festival Headquarters at 574-834-4316. Various local businesses also have applications.

The pageant will be June 19 at the North Webster Community Center starting at 7 p.m. All contestants must participate in the Mermaid Festival Cutie Parade at 6:30 p.m. June 17.

The Shoop Sports and Youth Foundation Inc. will provide scholarships totaling $30,000 for the parade. Scholarships totaling $20,000 will be provided for the pageant.
