During a school board meeting Tuesday, the Metropolitan School District of Wabash County unanimously approved Dr. Sandra Weaver as its new superintendent of schools.

According to the school district's central office, Weaver begins her duties July 1.

Weaver currently serves as the assistant superintendent for Warsaw Community School Corp.In a telephone interview this morning, Weaver said she couldn't make an announcement until Metropolitan School District had their school board meeting and approved her. She said her intent is to resign at Monday's Warsaw School Board meeting, with her resignation being effective June 30.

"It is exciting, and I'm rejoining Metropolitan School District," Weaver said.

Previously, Weaver said, she worked there as a special education teacher before her daughter was born. She also worked with their special education cooperative.

"I told them I'm staying for good this time," Weaver said. "The third time is the charm."

She said she's tried not to cry so far, as working for Warsaw Schools has been a wonderful experience for her. The experience at Warsaw has been humbling, she said.

"I will always consider the Warsaw staff family," she said.

"I'm going to go building to building today to tell the building administrators because I want them to hear it from me," Weaver said. She also will draft an e-mail to send out to all Warsaw faculty and staff to let them know of her intentions.

The Warsaw Schools building administrators are a great collaborative team, she said. She also said she has the utmost respect for Superintendent Dr. Robert Haworth.

"I have such great respect for the leadership of Dr. Haworth," she said. "I have learned so much from him that will help me in my new endeavor.

"I am going from one great school corporation to another."

Haworth said Weaver has done a great job for Warsaw Schools in her time with the school corporation.

"She will be missed. She has helped us through some difficult times in our school corporation," Haworth said. "She will be missed and we wish her the best of luck."

With Weaver's departure, the assistant superintendent position will be open. Haworth said the administrative team will meet and look at its options for the position. Possibilities could include replacing the position, or restructuring what WCS has.

"There are several opportunities we have," said Haworth.

According to Warsaw Schools Director of Human Resources Audrey Russell, Weaver started with Warsaw Schools in 1997 at the North Central Indiana Special Education Cooperative as assistant director. She retained that position for five years. In 2002, Russell said Weaver was named as assistant superintendent.

Prior to joining Warsaw Schools, Russell said Weaver had nine years of additional experience with other school systems.
