Weather Data Collectors Sought By Volunteer Group

Posted

Volunteer observers of rain and snowfall are being asked by the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network to report about weather conditions.

Free training will be provided by the National Weather Service and the Indiana State Climate Office at Purdue University in Mentone Monday at 7 p.m. in the Emergency Services Building.

Participants will learn how to accurately set up and read rain gauges and report the data on an easy-to-use Web site. Qualified new observers will be eligible to receive a free rain gauge for use in the project network. No specialized equipment or education is needed to become a snowfall observer.

This is a nationwide project expanding into northern Indiana.

CoCoRaHS is a volunteer, grass-roots network dedicated to monitoring water resources across the country. The public, and organizations involved in agriculture, public safety and natural resources management, will find benefits from this data, available free of charge on the Web site www.cocorahs.org

Currently, there are only two observers reporting rain, hail and snowfall data in Kosciusko County on the CoCoRaHS Web site.

Monday's session is free and open to any interested resident. More information can be found on the Net at www.weather.gov/iwx or by contacting Steve Eddy at the National Weather Service office in North Webster, 574-834-1104, Ext. 726. Eddy's e-mail address is steven.eddy @noaa.gov

CoCoRaHS Headquarters are in Solar House 3, near the Atmospheric Science Building, on the Foothills Campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.
