WCS Team Invited To Hockey Game

Chicago’s Saint Ignatius College Prep's hockey team will have its first hockey game this weekend since a semi-trailer-tractor hit its bus and injured 20 people from the team in Warsaw.

Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said there was an email from St. Ignatius and they want WCS’ team to drop the puck. He said WCS is trying to figure out the logistics. He said it will be part of the healing process for the St. Ignatius team.

On Nov. 12, a semi-trailer-tractor, driven by Victor Santos, 58, of Brooklyn, N.Y., hit the school bus at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Center Street. Santos is charged with four counts of causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle, Level 5 felonies; and 22 counts of criminal recklessness (while armed with a deadly weapon), Level 6 felonies. His pre-trial conference was Monday, but it was continued until Feb. 13.

In the probable cause affidavit, it stated Santos had a blood alcohol content of .13% and he was driving erratically on U.S. 30. He was followed by two cars, one from as far as Columbia City, that alleged Santos almost drove them off the road.

Maintenance Director Jim LeMasters said the email sent to WCS thanked the school corporation for providing a bus for St. Ignatius students after the accident.

Hoffert also said it shows no matter what position staff are in, they will drop things to help out.
