Warsaw Community Schools’ staff appreciation days are looking a little different this year as compared to other years, as heard during the Warsaw School Board work session Tuesday.
“This has been a different year because usually, we have different appreciations that are going out to the buildings and doing different things like BBQs and doing different staff appreciations,” Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said. “This year, our staff appreciations have had to look a little different.”
The change has been due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the school corporation has “done different snack carts during the year, we’ve done some different handouts that are out there and show appreciation.”
Hoffert said WCS wanted to do something different and bring people together.
“We started brainstorming an idea of what would be a common shirt for Warsaw Community Schools that shows everyone is part of that family,” Hoffert said. Different days throughout the year were picked where people could wear jeans and the common shirt.
Tuesday’s appreciation day was in honor of staff and students.
“So everyone throughout the school system is wearing their different Warsaw gear,” Hoffert said.
Hoffert and several board members were wearing WCS shirts that were printed by Abbi Richcreek, Edgewood Middle School Project Lead The Way teacher.
He said it’s to help bring people together during the pandemic.
Director of Maintenance Jim LeMasters updated the board on some of the projects being done.
LeMasters said he thinks the replacement of the Jefferson Elementary School gym will be kicked off next week. It is being replaced because the floor is buckling. The floor samples have been picked out. WCS did receive the required permit from the EPA allowing the school corporation to complete the project.
At Madison Elementary School, half of the water faucet cartridges were replaced last week. LeMasters said they’re waiting on a shipment of more cartridges to replace the other half. The cartridges are being replaced due to all of them failing.
At Lakeview Middle School, LeMasters said there are three dumpsters full of items the school has thrown out during the annual year end clean up.
Director of Transportation Mark Fick also was recognized during Tuesday’s work session.
He was honored by the Kosciusko County Commissioners as the Veteran of the Month during the commissioners’ meeting Tuesday morning.
Hoffert said it was a great ceremony, and all the WCS school bus drivers attended the event.
Hoffert said WCS is grateful for Fink for leading the transportation department and thanked Fink for his service.
