WCN Plans Hunger Run, Walk Saturday

Posted
WINONA LAKE - World Compassion Network's second annual run and walk for hunger is Saturday in Winona Lake.

The race begins at 10:30 a.m. at Winona Lake Park.

The course will run through Winona Lake into Stone Camp, the paved Heritage Trails and around the island in Winona Lake.

People can register the day of the event from 9 to 10:15 a.m. There will be awards for the top three finishers of each age group.

Also, awards will be given for the overall male and female runner.

There will be Nelson's Chicken on sale at the event for $6 and Pit-tatoes for $3.

Last year there were more than 600 participants who raised more than $7,200 net proceeds, according to Clark Shepherd, WCN disaster relief coordinator.

WCN allocated $2,400 each to Our Father's House, Combined Community Services and The Salvation Army. The funds helped to purchase more food for the pantries. The three organizations will benefit again this year.

This year Pulse FM will provide a live remote during the event.

The announcement of the artists performing at this summer's Pulse Festival will be made at the start of the race. Pulse also will provide tickets to the participants and spectators.

"This event is all about helping our community. The people of Warsaw have continued to support WCN in amazing ways and we are so humbled to have their partnership," Shepherd said.

Shepherd said God put this event on his heart last year, and felt he needed to reach out to the local community and organizations to help the families in Warsaw.

"Saturday is going to be an awesome day. You can come out to support our community by running or walking and then head to Indianapolis to cheer on the Tigers to win the state championship," Shepherd said.

Besides Shepherd, staff at WCN includes Josh Grill, mission coordinator; Chris Leiter, executive assistant; and Joe Wilkey, WCN founder and executive director.

People can visit WCN's Web site at www.w-c-n.org to download registration forms and to see last year's video of the event.
