Warsaw Community High School Theatre Department will perform “Shrek the Musical” next weekend at the Performing Arts Center.
Set in a mythical “once upon a time” sort of land, “Shrek the Musical” is the story of a hulking green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anything that crosses his path, retreats to an ugly green swamp to exist in happy isolation, according to the Broadway Shows website.
This is the first time “Shrek the Musical” has been put on while Melany Morris has been the theater director.
“‘Shrek’ has been my dream musical since I was 5 years old,” said Winona Olson, noting she’s watched the movie frequently as a child.
Leif Silva said it’s a very fun musical and the songs are very catchy. From the time he heard the audition pieces, he knew he wanted to be part of the production.
“Shrek” is a beautiful story that tells a very important message, said Hunter-Brian Fitterling.
Abby Leslie is a senior and she was excited to hear “Shrek the Musical” was being put on. It’s a big story about accepting yourself and she thought it’s an important story to tell in a high school. Leslie thought it was important for high schoolers to hear it’s OK to be themselves.
“The main message is about self-acceptance and just being who you are without apology,” said Olivia Ganser.
“Things aren’t always going to be what society thinks it needs to be,” said Comet Williamson, giving the example of Princess Fiona ending up with an ogre. “It’s OK to not be what you think you have to be.”
Leslie said her favorite part of the musical is when Shrek arrives in Dulac and some of the reactions he receives.
Showtimes at the PAC are 7 p.m. Nov. 14, 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and 2 p.m. Nov. 16. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
