WCHS Group Presents To Solid Waste DistrictA Family, Career and Community Leaders of America group from Warsaw Community High School presented information to the Kosciusko County Solid Waste District board Tuesday. The students, Chris Hollopeter, Brysten James and Nathan Kolbe, gave their presentation on how they are “kicking landfills in the face”. The presentation recently earned them a trip to a national conference in Anaheim, Calif. They identified a need to recycle bottles in the high school. After getting permission and cooperation from staff, they brought in several recycling bins and in eight weeks have collected 1,740 bottles. They said they want to grow the program and eventually hand it off to another FCCLA group. The students wrote and filmed a video that was shown to the high school to raise awareness. In other solid waste district business, the board looked into what it would cost to seal up the county’s recycling depot. Director Sue Studebaker said she only received interest from two companies on the project. If the board decides to go forward with the project, they’ll need an additional appropriation. Starting Saturday, the Kosciusko County Recycling Depot is kicking off Environmental Action Week. On Saturday, the depot will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be a special on tire collection with car tires costing just 50 cents. Truck and trailer tires will be $1.50 and tractor tires will range from $10 to $25 each. All electronics will be recycled for 5 cents per pound all week. WIOE will be broadcasting Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 11 a.m. Saturday, there will be a Composting With Worms Workshop. The Red Petunia Project will be on hand Saturday and there will be door prizes. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for collection.
