WCDC Discusses Wentzel Building, Lake Levels, Taste Of Downtown

Upcoming city events dominated the discussion at Warsaw Community Development Corp. board meeting Wednesday.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins gave the city report, saying the topic of the community is the decision to demolish the building owned by Dave and Susan Wentzel.

"We'll proceed with judgments," he said, "and exercise our options. The city is out of patience."

The building is at 110 E. Center St. and has been boarded up for several years.

Wiggins said the police department has completed its move to the Fort Wayne Street location. He advised the board an open house for the public will be May 5.

Parks superintendent Jon Garber said water is not escaping from Center Lake. He said the Department of Natural Resources is aware of the problem.

Water levels have been high since American Water Co. stopped taking water from the lake a few years ago.

Garber said the Biblical Gardens committee met recently and a work day was held in the garden last Saturday.

WCDC executive director Carmen Lock said plans for the Taste of Downtown, set for May 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the City of Lakes Festival, June 21 - 23, are proceeding well.

Celebrate Family is the theme for the City of Lakes parade, Lock said.

In other business, the board:

• Heard that 14 WCDC members have not paid their dues.

• Reviewed two banner designs for poles in Central Park, one featuring a U.S. flag and the other a U.S. flag with an American eagle.

• Approved changes to the WCDC bylaws.
