SYRACUSE -ÊWawasee is movin' on up, to Class 4A, that is. Starting next year, the Warriors will move up from their current Class 3A status.
According to Mary Hurley, Wawasee Athletic Director, sports that are divided into four classes by the IHSAA are the one that will be affected by the change. Those sports include baseball, volleyball and girls and boys basketball.
"I don't think this is a real surprise," said Hurley. "We have always been on the bubble. Four years ago, Wawasee was the largest 3A school. Wawasee wase acutally tied with another school, and the other school won the tiebreaker and became 4A while Wawasee remained in 3A.
"Then two years ago when the classes were restructured again, we were the sixth school from the top in 3A. We have always been near the top of 3A."
However, the class change does not mean a drastic schedule change for the Warriors.
"Our schedule has a good mix of opponents," said Hurley. "We have a few 2A opponents, but the majority of our opponents are in class 3A and 4A."
Hurley also said that most games are schedule two years in advance, so any changes will not show up until the 2002-2003 season.
Also, class size does not necessarily determine a team's schedule.
"When we schedule games, we look into accommodating the fans," said Hurley. "I'm not going to schedule games all over the state just to satisfy a class size. We want to make sure the fans have an opportunity to go to the games."
Changes in football classes will be announced next week by the IHSAA.
