SYRACUSE – Wawasee opened the Northern Lakes Conference portion of its softball schedule in style Monday evening, pounding out 18 hits in an 8-0 win over the visiting Warsaw Lady Tigers. Kayla White and Cristina DeLaFuente had four hits each for the Lady Warriors, and Amber Lemberg added three more. Junior Meghan Fretz, in addition to a hitting a single and a double, earned the win in the circle. She struck out 11 Lady Tigers and walked just two in the complete-game effort. Sarah Shoemaker had two hits for the Lady Tigers. Freshman Courtney Chookie pitched six innings for Warsaw, striking out three and walking two against the defending NLC champions. Wawasee got on the Lady Tigers early, scoring twice in the first inning and adding single tallies in each of the next two innings. Wawasee scored in every inning but the fourth, and 16 of its 18 hits were singles. The junior varsity game went to the Lady Tigers, 15-7. Warsaw (0-6 overall) will host Goshen in another conference contest Wednesday. Wawasee (7-1) has an important game Wednesday when it hosts conference contender Elkhart Memorial.
