SYRACUSE — The Wawasee girls swimming record board at the Wawasee Middle School will be getting a facelift. During the 14th-ranked Wawasee Lady Warriors' 119-66 home win Tuesday, senior Brittany Robinson and freshman Breanna Robinson combined to set four records — two school and two pool. "They were excited about trying to break some records — change up the record board," Wawasee coach, and the mother of the girls, Julie Robinson said. "There's some names that have been up there for many, many years. But really, their focus is on the end of the season. They want to swim fast now, so they can keep going in that direction." In the second race of the night, Breanna won the 200 free in 1:55.84, eclipsing 1995 Wawasee graduate Cathy Lundin's mark of 1:56.58. Later, it was University of Louisville-bound Brittany that was setting a record, swimming the 100 butterfly in 56.99, setting a new pool record, which she set last season. Just an event after seeing Brittany, the top-ranked 100 fly swimmer in the state, setting a new record, Breanna was back in the water for the 100 free, winning in 52.98, breaking the pool record and the school record of 53.25 set by 1999 graduate Laura Coutinho. Another record almost fell in the 100 back, when Brittany won in 58.60, just over the Lundin's mark of 58.43. The early season win puts Wawasee at 2-0, and against East Noble, the pursuit of records was more of an incentive than just winning races. "We're just trying to push ourselves right now," Julie Robinson said. "They have a lot of personal goals and team goals." In all, Wawasee won 10 of the 12 events, including all three relays. In the relays, senior Karla Allen, freshman Kira Bailey, Brittany and senior Sarah Steele won the 200 medley in 2:01.18; senior Sarah Rozow, Steele, freshman Rachel Rozow and Breanna won the 200 free in 1:47.62; and the foursome of Breanna, Rachel Rozow, Sarah Rozow and Brittany closed the meet out with a 3:52.74 victory in the 400 free. Other victories for the Lady Warriors were Allen in the 200 IM (2:29.81), Sarah Rozow in the 50 free (26.67) and senior Savannah Guimond in the meter dive (174.50). Brittany's presence on the team helped give Wawasee a high preseason ranking in last season's poll, but over the course of the season, the squad dropped out. However, now with another top-flight swimmer like Breanna, the Lady Warriors will be guaranteed more points as the sisters swim in different events, but their coach is looking for points from many other swimmers. "Having (Breanna) will definitely bring in points, but we have a real strong team," she said. "There's a lot of new freshmen girls that are really moving up. I was so happy with Kendra Miller's 200 free (second in 2:18.36). She's not a club swimmer. She just started swimming three weeks ago, so I think we have a lot growth with the kids. It's exciting just to watch them develop and grow this season." With so many records falling in just the second meet of the season, the Robinson sisters will most likely drop even more, although they do have different ways of going about it. While Brittany is powerfully built, Breanna has a more streamlined style, but whichever what they go about it, the results are the same. "They are completely opposite in the way they swim," Julie Robinson said about her daughters. "Brittany is definitely a powerhouse, while Bre is a little bit more technique and really sits on top of the water with her swim." Those styles will be on display again Monday at Elkhart Central.
