SYRACUSE -ÊFour students will represent Wawasee High School Saturday in the Ameritech Academic Superbowl State Competition.
Luke Speakman, Anita Doherty, Dustin Martin and Jonathan Trojan qualified for the math competition by placing third in their class statewide.
Regional competitions were held April 18. The top six or seven teams in each class are invited to compete at the state level.
The competition was close as NorthWood, Northridge and Wawasee were tied going into question 20. Northridge missed a question, leaving NorthWood and Wawasee in a tight race. In the end, both teams missed one question out of 25, but NorthWood placed first in the tie-breaker.
The team, coached by Kristi Harris, practiced weekly to prepare for the competition. The students work from a study guide provided by the state to gather material and practice problems. The team members represent 10th through 12th grades with various math backgrounds.
