Wawasee Second At Volleyball Invite

SYRACUSE - The Wawasee Warrior volleyball team placed second in its Saturday eight-team invitational.

Wawasee, 12-7, beat Wabash 11-15, 15-5, 15-2 in the first round. The Warriors beat Garrett 15-8, 15-9 in the second round, then took care of Bethany Christian 15-7, 10-15, 15-7 in the third round.

Wawasee then faced Elkhart Baptist in the championship match, losing 15-9, 4-15, 15-7.

Elkhart Baptist advanced to the championship by beating Culver Girls Academy 15-1, 15-6; Whitko 15-11, 15-5; and Columbia City 16-14, 15-11.

Whitko finished 2-2 on the day. Columbia City beat Whitko 15-6, 4-15, 15-12 in the first round and then lost to Elkhart Baptist.

Whitko rebounded to beat Culver 15-13, 15-2 and beat Garrett 10-15, 15-10, 15-11. Kayce Moore led Whitko with 14 kills and 13 digs, while BrieAnn Starkweather had 14 kills, four aces and five digs. Brigitte Goble had two aces, seven kills and 28 digs, and Amber Landis had two aces, eight kills and 27 digs. Kelly Osborn had six aces, 18 assists and five digs.

Wawasee had two players named to the All-Tournament team, seniors Theresa Lundin and Kari Beer.

Whitko was fifth. Whitko has a 5:30 match at Oak Hill today.

Wawasee hosts a 6 p.m. match with Warsaw on Thursday.

Warsaw Goes 1-3

At Indianapolis, the Warsaw Tiger went 1-3 in Saturday's competitive Ben Davis Invitational.

Muncie Burris, ranked No. 1, handled Warsaw 15-4, 15-13 in the first match. Martinsville, ranked No. 4, took care of the Tigers 15-10, 15-6 in the second match.

McCutcheon, ranked No. 15, beat Warsaw 14-16, 15-12, 15-11. Warsaw then recorded its only victory, beating Ben Davis 10-15, 15-13, 15-2.

Warsaw's Lisa Estep finished with 36 kills, 22 digs and seven aces. Jessica Zaugg had four digs, two solo blocks and 22 assists. Melissa Bolles had 61 assists and two aces, while Katie Clemens had 10 kills, four digs and four solo blocks. Sarah Calhoun had 25 kills, 21 digs, six solo blocks and three aces.

Warsaw is at Wawasee on Thursday.

Triton Improves To 12-3

At Bourbon, the Triton Trojan volleyball team beat Caston 15-4, 15-6 on Saturday. The win upped Triton's record to 12-3.

Holly Hepler led Triton with 11 assists, and Heather Barron added eight. Jennifer Weissert served three aces, while Hepler served one. Weissert led with seven kills.

Triton's junior varsity team improved to 7-2 by beating Caston 15-7, 15-4. Kelli Hackett led Triton with 11 assists, and Jessica Walker added eight. Kendra Blackford and Jamey Bell had five kills each. Blackford served six aces, while Jessica Walker had three.

Triton hosts LaVille at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Manchester Goes 1-2

At Fort Wayne, Manchester's volleyball team went 1-2 in Saturday's Elmhurst Invitational.

DeKalb beat Manchester 15-0, 15-8. Manchester then defeated New Haven 15-11, 15-11. Elmhurst then beat the Squires 15-2, 15-4.

Jodie Peden had 13 blocks and six kills for Manchester. She was 16-for-19 serving with six aces. Erin Groombridge had 10 assists.

Manchester, 6-13, has a match at 6 tonight at Rochester.

Triton, Manchester Compete

In New Prairie Invitational

At New Carlisle, the Manchester and Triton cross country teams competed in Saturday's New Prairie Invitational.

The Triton boys placed seventh out of 25 teams. More than 170 runners competed in the boys' race. Leading the way for Triton was Mason McIntyre, who placed eighth with a time of 17:15.

The Triton girls placed 15th out of 36 teams. Reghan Kreft turned in Triton's best time, placing 37th with a time of 17:12.

The Manchester boys placed 10th. Jeremy Stacy, who finished 20th, led Manchester. Manchester placed 22nd in the girls' race. Shay Knecht led Manchester by placing 17th.

Manchester has a 4:30 p.m. race at Southwood on Tuesday.

Triton hosts a 4:30 p.m. race with LaVille on Thursday.

Tippecanoe Valley 30,

Woodland 0

At Mentone, the Tippecanoe Valley junior varsity football team walked over Woodland 30-0 on Saturday.

The Vikings are 4-0, and their defense has not given up a point this season in 18 quarters of play, including the jamboree.

Alan Young rushed for 46 yards and scored two touchdowns to help lead Valley to the win. Anthony Simpson rushed for 40 yards and scored a touchdown. Mike McNeal rushed for 66 yards and had a two-point conversion.

Matt Bose scored a touchdown on a six-yard pass from Brandon Eaton. R.J. Hutchison completed a pass to Adam Smith for a two-point conversion.

Jeremy Fox and Phil Prater led the Vikings in tackle points.

Valley hosts Oak Hill next Monday.

Triton 2

At Bourbon, one big play by John Glenn was all the Falcons needed to beat the Triton junior varsity football team on Saturday.

Glenn scored eight points in the first quarter, which was all the Falcons needed. Triton scored its only two on a safety in the fourth quarter.

Triton had trouble moving the ball offensively, as Andy Price gained just 11 yards on six carries, while Nathan Setser had 16 yards on eight carries. Triton has a 10 a.m. game at New Prairie on Saturday.

• JV Tennis

The Warsaw Tiger junior varsity tennis team tied for third in its Saturday tournament, held at the Warsaw Racquet Club.

Plymouth won the tournament with 13 points and was followed by NorthWood with 12. Warsaw and Northridge tied for third with eight points each. Wawasee finished fifth with six points, and Tippecanoe Valley was last with four points.

The Tiger No. 1 doubles team of Matt Krizmanich and Eric Grossnickle turned in Warsaw's best performance, as they took second.

Warsaw's No. 2 doubles team of Ryan Kreager and Matt Kloser placed third, as did Warsaw's No. 3 doubles team of Steve Slaughter and David Honneffer.

Warsaw has a 4:30 match this afternoon at Concord.
