SYRACUSE – Amid nationwide talk of methods for better protecting students, one local school could soon try out a full-time police officer on-site. Milford Town Councilman Bob Cockburn approached the Wawasee School Board Tuesday evening with such an idea. Cockburn explained that the Milford Council has been discussing the benefits of such a program with Town Marshal Richard Miotto, but at present the plan is only in the talking stage. Cockburn presented the idea only to give the board notice that this is something his town is considering. Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington said that this issue is something the administration is still working on, and that he appreciated the input. The board also heard a second reading of policy updates and a first reading of a fraternization policy from attorney David Cates. Cates explained that periodically the board must update their corporation-wide policies to adhere to state and federal statutes. One of the updates includes procedure regarding concussions – another topic being discussed nationally. The fraternization policy drew some comments from board members because of a requirement that dating employees notify the superintendent. “What if a couple employees date for a while, do they have to report to Dr. Edgington?” questioned board member Mike Wilson. He drew some laughs with the followup, “I was a young teacher once! The policies will be read again. Edington told the board that he has received the school report card from the state, and results will soon be out. He noted that Wawasee schools have greatly improved in algebra, going from a 40 percent five years ago to 90 percent today. In other news the board presented awards to six swimmers who competed at the state finals. They were Breanna Robinson, Betsy Rozow, Kendra Miller, Kayla Hershberger and Zach Hershberger. Rozow was not in attendance but was recognized. The high school ag class has a new greenhouse, with the promise of a new aquaponics program in the future. Key Club members presented $20 coupons for magazines for all the corporation schools. Contracts were awarded to Signature Construction, Auburn, for renovations to the high school and Milford school, and to Fort Wayne Roofing & Sheet Metal for roofing. Make-up days will be April 22 and May 31.
