SYRACUSE - Wawasee High School student Chris Lambert asked the Wawasee School Board Monday not to use Saturdays to make up school days canceled by snow.
His request was not granted.
All Wawasee students will attend school all day March 27 and April 17. Students in kindergarten through grade 11 will attend school June 1 to June 4. The school corporation has applied for a couple of waiver days.
Seniors' commencement will be May 28.
"That means for our seniors, we can get them out after commencement," Wawasee Superintendent Mark Stock told the school board.
If Wawasee schools has another canceled day, Stock said, seniors will have to make up the day on another Saturday or attend school after commencement.
"This is a situation where no one is happy," Stock said.
Wawasee High School boys golf and the track team will have to withdraw from competition on April 17, Wawasee High School Athletic Director Mary Hurley said. Events scheduled for March 27 will probably be rescheduled.
Lambert is on the track team and told the school board he wanted to defend his championship at North Side April 17.
He told the school board, "Think of learning as a wide horizon, not just a brick building with four walls."
The school board approved the snow makeup days 3-0.
Board president Jeff Wells said, "It's going to take a give-and-take on everyone's part."
In other business, the school board will have a public works session March 24 at 7 p.m. at the Wawasee Middle School auditorium. The meeting, about renovating the North Webster school or building a new school, is open to the public.
A review of a survey report and soil tests of Mid-Lake Farms will also be undertaken.
In February, the Katharine Warner White family said in a letter they would like the Wawasee School Board to consider other property. The White family has owned the Mid-Lake Farms for more than 150 years. The board has been given permission, however, to survey the land and test the soil to see if the ground is suitable to be built on.
Stock said no decisions have been made yet.
The school board will also review architect costs and a presentation on financing the project will be given. Other input as well as public input will be given.
A second reading of a revision of board policy 7.40 was also given Monday.
The policy is a simple statement of specific obligations of teachers. It states that there are other obligations not mentioned in the policy.
Some of those obligations include: all teachers shall observe working hours as stated in the Master Contract for Teachers; all teachers shall exercise proper supervisory responsibilities; lesson plans for the next week are to be completed by the close of the last school day of the current week and must be available to the principal upon request; and teachers shall be responsible for the proper care of equipment assigned to their curricular or extracurricular responsibilities.
The policy also says teachers shall attend administrative meetings and shall obtain permission from the principal when necessary to leave the building during the school day.
A teacher who fails to comply with any of these rules and regulations shall be deemed to have violated the policy unless the failure is excused by the principal.
In personnel business, the school board accepted the resignation of Wawasee High School boys' basketball varsity coach Jerry Davis.
