SYRACUSE - Wawasee Community School Corp. is the only school district in Kosciusko County that offers string orchestra instruction among its academic programs.
Beginning in the fifth grade, students may begin the study of violin, viola, cello or string bass, and can continue the study of those instruments throughout middle school and high school. Orchestra director Dr. Joyce Dubach works with more than 100 string students in all five schools in the corporation.
Dubach is visiting fourth-grade students this week to talk about the string instruments and enrolling in the orchestra for next year. Informational meetings will be held for parents of fourth-grade students the following week at each of the elementary schools. Information will be given about the orchestra classes and an opportunity will be available to arrange for renting an instrument for the year.
The meetings will be held at: Milford School, May 24, band room, 5:30 p.m.; Syracuse Elementary School, May 24, multi-purpose room, 7 p.m.; North Webster Elementary School, May 21, music room, 7 p.m.
Parents may attend any of the informational meetings convenient for them. Parents who are unable to attend any of the meetings may contact Dubach at Wawasee High School at 574-457-3147, or through the elementary schools - North Webster, 574-834-7644; Milford, 574-658-9444; and Syracuse, 574-457-4484.
Summer lessons on the string instruments also are being offered this year to current Wawasee string orchestra students. Interested students may contact Dubach.
