Only one match threatened to go to a third set, and it was the difference in Wednesday’s tennis sectional at Warsaw Community High School. In the opening-round of the five-team sectional, the Wawasee Lady Warriors pulled out a 3-2 win over Columbia City with wins at No. 3 singles and both doubles positions. With the team score 2-2, Wawasee pulled out the victory and extended its season when Kendra Doerr and Courtney Larson defeated Leah Mills and Jayma Acres 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 2 doubles. “This is a great rebound from a disappointing NLC Tournament performance,” said Wawasee coach Shane Staley. With the win, the Lady Warriors improved to 4-9 on the season and advanced to today’s sectional semifinals against Tippecanoe Valley. Warsaw, in search of its 16th straight sectional title, will play Whitko in today’s other 4:30 p.m. semifinal. The championship match is slated for 4:30 p.m. Friday, with the winner advancing to next week’s Culver Academies Regional. In No. 3 singles action Wednesday, Wawasee’s Meg Heinisch beat Megan Stevenson 6-1, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, the Wawasee duo of Kabrea Rostochak and Charity Parker beat Katie Wigel and Mackenzie Lane 6-0, 6-1. Columbia City’s Maria Sitja beat Jazlyn Gelhausen 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match, while Hannah Berm beat Wawasee’s Peyton Rookstool 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
