Staff Report-
SYRACUSE - Wawasee High School music department announced the first concert of the year for the high school orchestra will be Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the WHS auditorium. There is no admission charge, but donations in support of the Wawasee orchestra program will be accepted.
The first half of the concert will feature students of the orchestra as soloists or in small chamber ensembles. Chamber music is for a small group of musicians, usually with one player on a part. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has been described as "the music of friends" and most of the ensembles reflect that. Playing chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, which are different than the skills required for playing in an orchestra.
Featured in the first half of the concert will be Cayla Hilgenberg as piano soloist, and six ensembles: Joe Bohnstedt, Andrew Dove, Devin Vanlaningham, violins, and Nick Jamiel, viola, in a quartet; Hailey Smith, Mariah Woolley, Sarah Jones, Tabitha Morris, Sara Buyer and Hannah Searer in a violin sextet; Ellie Gilbert and Leah Bateman in a violin duet; Mattia Rostochak, Kalyn McDaniel, violins, and Katie Allen, cello, in a trio; Leah Bateman, Ellie Gilbert, violins, and Malea Vanlaningham, viola, in a trio; and Miranda Earnhart, Karla Allen, violins, Samantha McQuade, viola, and Ryan Smith, cello, in a string quartet.
After intermission, the orchestra will perform several selections under the direction of Erika K. Pappas, student teacher from Grace College. Included in the program is an original composition, "Sweet Suspense," arranged for the WHS orchestra by composer Daniel C. Pappas, brother of the conductor.
