SYRACUSE - Wawasee School Board voted unanimously Tuesday on Superintendent Dr. Mark Stock's recommendation for a reduction in force for the 2005-2006 school year.
The cuts are necessary to combat the school corporation's budget woes.
Wawasee will cut a math, science and English teacher for the high school; an aquatics and eighth grade teacher from the middle school; a first grade teacher from North Webster elementary; and one physical education teacher from another elementary.
The individuals affected by this have been contact as per state law, but Stock is hoping these cuts will not be necessary due to other retirements and attrition.
In addition to the reduction in forces, the board also voted to implement a wage freeze for all corporation administrators.
They also looked into other money-saving activities such as closing the high school pool, eliminating non-profit donations, and staff development cost shifts.
"We are now as lean as we can go without cutting programs," Stock said. "At this point it's an emotional issue for our faculty. There are still retirements and other things that could affect this."
Stock said any further reductions in future years forced by the state legislature will result in reduction or total elimination of student programs.
The board also approved the high school summer school program, approved the 2005-2006 school year calendar, approved the adoption of new science and health textbooks, and received a plaque commemorating the success of the boys' basketball program.
