SYRACUSE - Students in Wawasee School Corp. won't have to worry about year-round school.

Tuesday, the Wawasee School Board approved a resolution that the corporation not implement year-round school. The resolution is a state requirement for school districts whenever new facilities are being built. Wawasee schools is building a new North Webster Elementary School and renovating the other schools in the corporation.

The school board also approved unanimously a resolution to enter into a lease agreement, pending the state board of tax commissioners' approval, for the building project. The lease for the building will be for a maximum of 25 years, but the school board can reduce the project size at any time without any obligation.

A second reading was given on the board policy requiring 40 credits for graduation beginning with the class of 2004.

The board also completed the first of three readings of policies that state that students who do not meet the standards in the Graduation Qualifying Exam but who complete 40 credits, beginning with the class of 2004, and who meet all other criteria for an Indiana diploma and local requirements for graduation, are eligible for a "certificate of completion."

Previously, those students were eligible for a "certificate of graduation." However, Wawasee superintendent Mark Stock said the state recommends school corporations not use the word "graduation" in such cases to avoid confusion. The policy is a change in wording only and not a change in practice.
