Wawasee Holds On For 2-Point Win Over Lady Knights

SYRACUSE – Wawasee held a seven-point lead after three quarters and held on for a 46-44 season-opening girls basketball win over Mishawaka Marian Thursday night at the Hardwood Tepee. The Lady Warriors had a balanced scoring attack, with Seaquinn Bright hitting seven free throws on her way to a nine-point night. Bright scored six of Wawasee’s eight points in the fourth quarter, including her only field goal and four free throws. Aubrey Kuhn had eight points, Kylee Rostochak had seven, with Kabrea Rostochak, Hannah Haines and Erin Wiktorowski scoring five points each. Aubrey Schmeltz had four points and Hannah-Marie Lamle three to round out the Wawasee scoring. Wawasee will take its 1-0 record to Benton Tuesday night when it takes on Fairfield. Thursday in Fort Wayne Junior Aly Reiff hit a dozen free throws on her way to a game-high 28 points, and classmate Brianna Cumberland hit six three-point shots en route to 26 points in Whitko’s 90-37 season-opening rout of Fort Wayne North Side Thursday night. Hanna Yohe was also a double-digit scorer with 11 points. Jennifer Reiff and Emily Day had seven points each, Emily Snep tallied five points and Kennedy Krull had four points for the Lady Wildcats. Whitko will take its 1-0 record to Albion Tuesday night for a game with Central Noble.
