SYRACUSE – As Wawasee High School approaches the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, Principal Don Harman issued a press release informing the community of the school’s many activities, changes and updates.
From the outside and inside of WHS, many structural changes have and are occurring. On the south end of the campus, a new addition will be completed this fall which will include new industrial technology classrooms and labs, a new weight room and a new lockerroom.
At the main entrance, major construction currently is underway to renovate the main office. Once completed, all visitors will enter the main office before entering the campus and will increase the safety for the students, staff and community. The completion of this project will be this fall as well.
The main campus also had renovation this summer with updates to the ventilation system, new energy-efficient windows in many areas as well as the exterior having been updated with energy-efficient panels. This renovation project will be completed by the beginning of the first teacher workday Aug. 15.
Also this summer, according to Harman, the technology department has worked endlessly to update the school’s technology, which includes wireless capability throughout the campus. Teachers will receive new desktop computers and all freshmen students will receive a Droid tablet to be used in their classes this fall. It is the goal that each year for the next four years, each freshmen class will receive a one-to-one device, and in four years, all students at Wawasee High School will have a one-to-one device to use as a resource and prepare each student for the 21st century.
The weekly schedule at Wawasee High School will change for the 2011-12 school year.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there will be a time during the day so that all students may have remediation assistance, make-up tests as well as have time to complete school work. Every student will be expected to focus on their academics during “Warrior Time”.
On Wednesdays, the student school day will not begin until 8:30 a.m. to allow teachers to improve instruction to students through professional development activities between 7:20 and 8:20 a.m. The school will have the cafeteria and media center open for students who want to come to school at the regular time. The school will continue to have the school open at 7 a.m. each school day.
