Wawasee Golfers Top Valley

SYRACUSE – Jeffrey Moore shot an even par 36 on the back nine at South Shore to lead Wawasee to a 156-168 win over Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday afternoon.
Moore’s efforts were nearly matched by teammate Tristen Atwood, who was 1-over on the afternoon. Kaleb Perry had a 41 and Cal Heinisch a 42 to round out the Warriors’ scoring.
“It’s usually a close match when these two teams get together. We both have our teams ready to play each other, and it usually comes down to a few shots,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “This year was certainly no exception. It was a good match. This is the best round we’ve shot this year.”
Coverstone said he’d take scores like he got from Moore and Atwood every match.
“We’d take that all the time, definitely. We need a little bit better play out of three and four, but 41 and 42 is not bad,” he said.
“Our point of emphasis is to try and eliminate double bogeys and worse, and we did a better job but still didn’t eliminate them. We had a couple of guys get a couple of them.”
Valley senior Bryce Zimpleman led the Vikings with a 40, and Trevor Neeley recorded a 41.
“Both of them are pretty consistent players,” said Valley head coach Roger Moriarty “The young man that is coming on for us is Jeremy Julian; he’s a sophomore and he had a 44 for us tonight. Corey Carson is our other senior, other than Bryce, and he had a 43.
“A 168 is one of our better scores of the year.”
The 15th hole, a 470-yard par-5 with a creek about 200 yards from the tee box, was a  troublesome hole for the Valley players.
“Our top four guys played that hole in what, 5-over?” Moriarty said. “On a par-5, you can’t do that.”
Wawasee ran its varsity record to 9-1 on the season, and will play in the Joe Harris Shootout at Rozella Ford today. The Warriors will then play at the Homestead Invitational at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne on Saturday.
Valley will play in the LaVille Invitational on Saturday at Sprig-O-Mint Golf Course near Bremen.
