SYRACUSE – Wawasee’s boys golf team prevented rival Warsaw from completing an undefeated Northern Lakes Conference season. The Warriors hosted the Tigers and defeated them 159-163 at South Shore Thursday. The Warriors’ Jeffrey Moore was the medalist, carding a 1-over par 37. Kaleb Perry and Tristan Atwood supported the Wawasee cause with scores of 38 and 39, respectively. Mason Germonprez overcame a rugged start to card a 45. “We won, that’s always good,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “It’s always a tough match with Warsaw; that never changes. It’s definitely a nice win. “Jeffrey, Tristen and Kaleb played well. Mason Germonprez started triple, double, double and played his last six holes in two-over.” Jonny Hollar led the way for the Tigers with a 40, while Brandon Eckert, Ryan Coulter and Reid Cameron each checked in with 41s. While recognizing the rivalry between the schools and a high level of play on the day, neither coach put a great deal of emphasis on the result in relation to the overall season. Both were looking to the conference tournament at Spring Meadows in Middlebury on Saturday, and the soon-to-follow postseason. “This doesn’t change anything for us,” said Warsaw head coach Ben Barkey. “We have one day of practice and we’ll treat it like a typical practice, then head up to Middlebury this weekend. Nothing concerned me here tonight. It’s sports and it happens. We were higher than what we expected, but that’s why everyone loves sports; because the outcome isn’t always what was predicted.” Coverstone added “the back nine at Spring Meadows can play really tight, especially if the wind is blowing. “We’ll go up and play the best we can and see what happens.”
