Wawasee Girls, Warsaw Boys Win In NLC Swimming Dual

Wawasee’s girls swim team edged Warsaw 94-91, while the Tiger boys team tripped the visiting Warriors 118-68 in the Northern Lakes Conference openers for both schools Saturday in Warsaw.
For the Lady Warriors, Paige Miller was a double winner in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, and Kayla Hershberger won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Brady Robinson was a double winner for Wawasee, taking the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Ethan Cook won a pair of races for the Tigers, taking the 200 free and the 100 butterfly.
Warsaw’s teams return to action Thursday when they take on NorthWood in Nappanee. Wawasee takes on Elkhart Memorial with the diving today and the swimming on Tuesday in Elkhart.

Wrestling
Saturday in Syracuse
Wawasee finished second in its Super Duals meet on Saturday, beating Whitko 54-26, Eastside 39-33, DeKalb 42-30 and losing to meet champion Columbia City 42-33.
Braxton Alexander (106 lbs.) Ronny Short (138) and Stephen Possell (182) were weight-class champions for the Warriors.
“After going 0-5 at our tournament last year, our guys were focused on improving this year and performing well every time out,” said Wawasee head coach Frank Bumgardner said. “We went 3-1 (Saturday) and overall performed fairly well. We still have a lot of positions we need to improve, but right now we’re headed in the right direction.”
Tippecanoe Valley was winless in the tournament as a team. Alvaro Guiterrez went 3-1 at 170 pounds, and Josh Back went 2-2 at 195. Micah Owens also went 2-2 at 113 pounds for the Vikings.
The Warriors return to action Saturday at the LaPorte Invitational. Whitko hosts North Miami in Three Rivers Conference action Tuesday, and Valley opens TRC competition when it hosts Wabash Tuesday.

Girls Basketball
Saturday in Bourbon
Triton finished second and Wawasee fourth in the Triton Tournament Saturday. Triton bested Leo 26-24 in the tournament opener, giving the Lady Trojans their first win of the season, while Wawasee fell to Lebanon 66-50 in the opening round.
The Lady Warriors then dropped a 50-35 decision to Leo in the consolation game. Afterward, the Lady Trojans lost 72-15 to Lebanon in the championship game.
Wawasee (2-4) travels to Ligonier to take on West Noble Tuesday. Triton (1-7) hosts LaVille in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Saturday in Akron
After winning its semifinal game over Portage 53-38, seventh-ranked Tippecanoe Valley  dropped its first game of the year 50-44 to Westfield in the final of the Lady Vikings Classic Saturday.
Anne Secrest had 35 points in the two games, and Meredith Brouyette had 25 in the tournament.
Now 5-1, the Lady Vikings will play their first road game of the year Wednesday when they travel to Plymouth.

Saturday in North Manchester
Drew Thompson had eight points and Cierra Carter six in Manchester’s 53-28 loss to Oak Hill Saturday.
In the junior varsity game Bethany Collett had 12 points and Kennedy Fierstos eight in a 34-21 loss to Oak Hill.
The Lady Squires (3-3) travel to Lewis-Cass tonight.

Chase Fierstos had 24 points for the Squires in Manchester’s 59-48 loss to visiting Oak Hill.
