Wawasee Gets Second Postseason

SYRACUSE - Wawasee may have lost to Bellmont in the team semistate wrestling match, but the season is far from over for several Wawasee grapplers.

Wrestling has two postseasons, as a team and as individuals. Nine Wawasee grapplers are still alive in the individual competition.

Wawasee dominated last week's Carroll Regional, the regional for grapplers to advance regardless of how their team fared. Wrestlers from 20 schools competed in the Carroll Regional for the right to advance to this Saturday's Adams Central Semistate at Memorial Coliseum.

But one school -ÊWawasee - dominated the regional. One school - Wawasee - had six champions in 14 weight classes. They are Chet Wortinger (112 pounds), Jacen Hendricks (130), Ryan Johnson (135), Kevin Carr (145), Jason Carr (160) and Jamie Salazar (heavyweight).

Those six have the inside track to advancing to the state finals. They each get byes for being champions, so by winning only one match, they're automatically in the state finals.

Those aren't the only Warriors to advance. Those who placed in the top three at the regional also advance. For Wawasee, Travis Coy (119), Tyler Cline (140) and J.J. Davis (152) also move on.

Coy placed second, while Cline and Davis took third.

Other schools are sending grapplers to Saturday's Adams Central Semistate. Whitko's Todd Grube (160) and Ben Watson (119) advance, as do Manchester's Eric Sommer (215), NorthWood's Jesse Espinoza (103) and Brandon Chapman (125). Grube improved to 35-0 after winning last week's championship.
