SYRACUSE - Enrollment figures are vital to any school corporation, including the Wawasee school corporation.
At Tuesday's board meeting, Superintendent Mark Stock said Wawasee schools have 3,608 total students enrolled. That number is down 36 children from last year. Each kindergartner counts as half a student, but they were down as much as 53 from the 1996-97 year.
"Kindergarten is one grade-level you can't predict. They have no history," Stock said.
An enrollment total is reviewed by the school board every October.
The board asked Stock if the qualifying examinations would affect the overall enrollment. Stock said there wasn't enough information yet but they would need to watch that.
In other news, the board approved the goal-action plans. The plans were devised by board members, administrators and teachers at a meeting and in various committees.
The goals include communications at all levels; improved community relations; staff improvement; an assessment plan; a facility that meets needs; an integration of reading, writing and math into all curriculum; and improved curriculum in math and science. Some of the goals are already in progress, Stock said.
Board member Marion Acton said, "I'm very pleased to make a motion to pass (the corporation action plan and goals)."
Alice Navarro was approved as the coordinator for English as a second language programs, retroactive to Sept. 28.
"I'm sure she is going to be an asset to our corporation," Acton said.
