As of this morning, Wawasee School Corp. Superintendent Mark Stock said classes at Syracuse and Milford elementary schools are scheduled to begin Friday.
"It appears we will be able to start tomorrow," he said today. He will take another walk through the building today and check the buildings out once more but expects everything to be ready to go.
The delay, he said, was caused by a cluster of factors. First, there was no hot water at each of the sights. At Milford, there was still dust from the construction work and the cooks did not have a chance to clean the kitchen. There is still some work to be done to the halls and classrooms.
The schools' staffs have been under pressure to get their classrooms ready, he said, because they haven't been able to get into their rooms. "They've been scrambling to get ready," Stock said.
If for any reason the schools are not ready, Stock said parents should listen to the local radio stations for more information.
Syracuse and Milford elementaries are the only Wawasee schools which have been delayed due to construction. "The other schools are in session," Stock said.
A decision on whether to ask for a waiver for the days Syracuse and Milford elementary students missed due to the construction has not yet been made. Stock said a couple of factors that weigh in as to whether he will ask for waivers from the state include how many snow days there may be and the fact that the schools are "out of sync" with the other Wawasee schools. It is likely, however, that Stock will apply for the waivers and he can apply for them at any time, but he is taking a wait-and-see approach.
If a waiver is applied for and granted, Stock said he will announce it at a school board meeting.
