Wawasee Edges Rival Warsaw At Stonehenge

Posted
Warsaw’s Jonny Hollar won the battle. The Wawasee Warriors, however, won the war.
In a Northern Lakes Conference 9-hole boys golf match Tuesday, Hollar fired a 2-under 33 on Stonehenge’s back side.
With both teams shooting four-man scores of 160, though, the Warriors won the match via a tiebreaker.
Both Cal Heinisch and Rich Rasmus shot 44 for the Warriors, compared to the Tigers' fifth-man score, a 46 by Michael Jensen.
“We should have won,” said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey, who admitted he was both excited about Hollar’s performance, but disappointed in the overall play of his team. “No disrespect to Wawasee, (coach) Steve Coverstone does a great job with them and deserves all the success in the world, but we're playing on our home course, and we get a 33. You should win those matches.”
No other player shot below 40 for the Tigers, who fell to 1-2 overall this season in 9-hole matches and 0-1 in the NLC standings.
Will Petro shot a 40, while warsaw's varsity lineup also included Brandon Eckert's 43, Ryan Cultice's 44 and Jensen's 46.
“Jonny shot a great round, and I'm very proud of him, but you have to have four scores,” said Barkey.
With the win, the Warriors improved to 8-1 in 9-hole matches this season and 1-0 in conference play.
While the Tigers had one standout score, Wawasee was the definition of consistency.
Tristen Atwood, who left immediately after the match to go visit his grandfather in an Indianapolis hospital, led the way with a 37.
Jeffrey Moore and Mason Germanprez shot 39 and 40, respetively, while Heinisch and Rasmus carded 44s.
“Our guys played pretty well,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “A 160 here (at Stonehenge) is about the top of our ability.
“Anytime you can get a win over Warsaw, no matter where you play them, is good,” added Coverstone.
The Tigers are in action again Thursday when they host NLC foes Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth for Senior Night.
The Warriors entertain conference rivals Northridge and Goshen Thursday.
