SYRACUSE - Wawasee School Board met Tuesday and heard a second reading of the corporation's proposed wellness policy, including changes recommended by board members during last month's meeting.
The Student Wellness Policy is a required policy intended to ensure students have access to physical activity and healthful foods.
Changes from the first reading include the elimination of a paragraph discouraging outside foods from being brought into the school and a paragraph regarding the superintendent's responsibility to implement the policy.
Board members objected to the outside foods paragraph because it could prohibit birthday parties at the elementary school or discourage parents or family members from bringing in lunch to share with a student.

The board approved the 2006-2007 All Write!!! bylaws. Next year the corporation will pay $4,000 to remain an All Write!!! member school. The amount includes teacher in-services and workshops and training for the corporation's writing coach.
Last year Wawasee paid $1,651 to All Write!!! The increase is due to the loss of Dekko Foundation grant funding.
Retirees Jane Modesitt and Chris Hopkins were honored. Modesitt was a special needs teacher at Wawasee for 10 years and Hopkins taught elementary school at Wawasee for 21 years.
The board accepted donations from Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce and Alan Tehan. The chamber donated $500 to Syracuse Elementary School toward Jimmy's Playground. Tehan donated $3,000 in computers and software for the high school's auto services technology program.
The board scheduled budget meetings for Aug. 1 at 5 p.m. and Aug. 22.
