School facilities in the Wawasee school district may soon see some improvements, the school board decided Tuesday.
In a special meeting Tuesday to discuss pending building projects, board members decided which projects should be put up for public discussion. Growing enrollment at North Webster Elementary must be addressed, the board said, and tennis courts at Wawasee High School also were discussed.
The amount of improvement that should be done to North Webster Elementary was a matter of debate.
"No one wants to see an 800- student elementary," said Mark Stock, Wawasee superintendent.
However, with enrollment closing in on the mid-600s, the option for 660 students was discussed.
Milford Elementary was also another issue being addressed. The board discussed several possibilities but focused on two: redistricting to lessen the burden on Milford or building new classrooms.
New tennis courts may be built at Wawasee High School, with the proposed plan putting the new courts between the soccer field and the Syracuse-Webster Road.
How many courts to be put in was a matter of debate. The debate revolves around whether to put in eight or 10 courts. If the school puts in 10, they will be able to hold sectional and tournament events.
The original bids for the tennis courts were all rejected by the school board as too high. Instead, major reductions were implemented. The first item to go was a proposed retaining wall at a savings of $90,000.
"We did not think the retaining wall would be that high," said board member Gary Watkins.
Two other items to be revised in the proposal involved the earth work and drainage issues.
New bids will be taken for the projects and more information will be available after the next board meeting in April.
The board of trustees will soon bring the improvement project options to the public for their input.
In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Colette Berg, a teacher at Milford Elementary.
