A quick glance over the scores from Tuesday's three-way Northern Lakes Conference boys golf match at Stonehenge and Curtis Coverstone's 1-under par score of 34 jumps out.
Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone, the talented senior's dad, was quick to point out Ryan Koble's 39 and Ben Jackson's 40 were just as important to the Warriors, who carded a 151.The host Tigers shot 160 and Goshen rounded out the field with a 168.
"Ryan Koble doesn't have a lot of varsity experience, but he played pretty well today," said Coverstone. "He tripled the first hole and still ends up with a 39. He kept it together and finished well."
"Ben Jackson is a sophomore playing his first year," added the Wawasee coach. "He doubled the first hole and tripled No. 5 and still shot a 40. It was those efforts that made the difference."
Other Wawasee scores included John Kirkwood's 38 and George Adamitis' 42.
Sophomore Eric Tandy led Warsaw's young team with aa 37, while freshman Tyler Ostrom carded a 39.
Junior Kal Denlinger finished with a 41 for the Tigers, while freshman Bennett Hollar turned in a 43 and senior Scotty Boyle carded a 44.
"Give Wawasee credit, they've put together a heck of a team," said Warsaw coach Ben Barkey. "Coach Coverstone does a great job with them. Give them credit, they played great, they came to our house and beat us. A 151 here is pretty good."
Collin Chapman led Goshen with a 42, while Eric Peters and Brandon Doss shot 42 for the Redskins. Matt Diller and Steve Koronkiewicz rounded out Goshen's lineup with a 43 and 45, respectively.
Warsaw will get another chance to beat Wawasee at Stonehenge June 6 when the Tigers host the sectional.
"We're still young, and I think that caught up with us tonight," said Barkey. "We just had too many doubles. We have a lot of potential, we just have some growing up to do. That's not a knock on my team, we're just young, and that's the way it is with young teams."
With Tuesday's wins, Wawasee improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the NLC, while Warsaw is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Goshen is 8-2 overall and 0-2 in the NLC.
Wawasee is in action again Thursday, hosting NLC foes Elkhart Memorial and NorthWood at South Shore.
The Tigers play at Spring Meadow Farm Thursday against conference rival Northridge.
