Wawasee Board Hears About Grad Requirements

Posted
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee School Corporation Board of Trustees held its monthly meeting last night to discuss the possibility of new graduation requirements, ISTEP+ scores and several other items.
According to Dr. Tom Edington, Wawasee superintendent, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education has already looked into creating a “college and career ready” high school diploma. This course would have different credit requirements than the current diploma options. This diploma could be available by 2022 for the current six-grade students in the Wawasee district.
Joy Goshert reported that ISTEP+ scores from last school year should be available by this November. When those scores come in, parents will have five days to ask the state grading board to regrade their students’ scores if need be. In past years, the schools could request tests be scored again. Starting this year, parents will be responsible for this action.
In other news, the board heard that the Women of Today, led by Holly Tuttle, donated $2,500 to Syracuse Elementary School; and at Wawasee Community High School’s homecoming, the deaths of two local students, one from WCHS and one from Plymouth High School, were honored.
Edington approved a 3.5 percent pay raise for all teachers with five years experience, which also applies to substitute teachers. Edington also advised that construction has already started for the new Syracuse Elementary School and that the official groundbreaking ceremony will be Tuesday at 4 p.m.
