After coming off of three straight conference losses, Wawasee got a break and hosted non-conference Mishawaka Marian for Homecoming Night hoping to end the losing streak on Friday.
The Warriors, entering the game at 3-4, fell behind early 3-0 as freshman kicker Dan Fitzpatrick put a low line-drive in from 31 yards out. Fitzpatrick had knocked down a 38 yarder last week as time ran out to give Marian a three point victory over South Bend Washington.
However, those were the only points the Knights' offense could muster as Wawasee came up with two huge plays and won 14-3.
Just as Marian was putting together a drive in Wawasee's end of the field in the second quarter, quarterback Joseph Catanzarite threw a wild pass up for grabs and safety Aaron McFarland stepped up and picked it off, going 70 yards for a score.
Leading 7-3 at the half, the Warriors came right out of the gate in the third quarter. On the third play of the opening drive, quarterback Jeff Beer hooked up with Brad Brown over the top of a couple of Knight defenders for a 59 yard touchdown pass.
Things only got worse for Marian and its option offense from there on out. Looking to return the favor on the ensuing possession, they were stopped in Warrior ground on fourth-and-14 with an incompletion. Later Knight drives fell to key penalty flags, such as their first possession in the fourth on the opponents' 27 when a third-and-nine became a third-and-sixteen and they were once again stopped.
Although Marian had 15 first downs compared to Wawasee's six, key players like Brown and Beer came up big. Beer was almost perfect with seven of eight passing, while Brown caught three passes for 72 yards. It was Brown's biggest offensive night of the season since having 134 receiving yards the first week of play.
Wawasee moved to .500 with an overall record of 4-4 and remains 2-3 in the NLC. They close out the regular season on Friday at Goshen.
