SYRACUSE - A pencil drawing of an iguana won the best of show award at the 1999 Wawasee High School art show.
The artist, senior Case Hensler, said, "I think it's cool that I did (win), but if I didn't, it wouldn't have hurt my feelings."
WHS art teacher Cindy Bryan said the school will purchase the art piece for $100 and display it outside the auditorium at the front of the building, as has been the custom. Ribbons were distributed to all other winners.
"It was a strong showing. We had very strong works of art this year," Bryan said. She said the art show had steady attendance and was well attended.
Megan King, a WHS senior, said, "I think it's a good way to express my emotions, thoughts and feelings through art. I didn't care for the judging, I just wanted to show how I felt to my fellow students."
King and Kate Richardson both had art pieces in the show that won first place.
"I thought (the art show) was really neat. I personally did well. I was surprised at the best of show winner," Richardson said with Hensler beside her.
