Wawasee Approves $2.2M In Renovations

Posted
SYRACUSE – Wawasee School Board unanimously approved a bid Monday of over $2 million to improve some of the corporation’s facilities.

The $2,219,600 bid was from Hamilton Hunter Builders Inc., Fort Wayne.

In January, the school board approved publication of the bids, said Director of Legal and Personnel Services James Flecker. The school board received bids Thursday.

Renovations will include student restrooms at the high school and middle school, with stools and urinals to be replaced.

“Instead of towel dispensers, we’ll have hand dryers. New sinks, new stalls,” Flecker said.

The roof of the high school gymnasium needs to be replaced. At the high school, the “P.E. locker rooms need a little touchup. They’re in pretty rough shape, so there would be some cleaning in there. There would be grout removal and replacement. There were tiles missing on the floor. The restrooms needs upgrading,” he said.

At the middle school, there are approximately 15 drains that would have to be rerouted and reworked. The metal coping (covering) around the outside wall of the building, “which would be the limestone at the top that goes around the entire building,” would be removed and replaced and there will be aluminum seals that would cap the new coping and attach to the roof.

There are approximately 1,000 bricks that will need to be replaced. The bricks will need to be stained since the color isn’t made any more, Flecker said.

In addition, an additional 55 parking spaces will be added to the new central office.

“When we receive initial bids from general contractors, they won’t have subcontractors lined up yet until they receive the bid, but we do get notified of what subcontractors are to be used,” he said.

He said in 2015, Hamilton Hunter Builders did work at the high school over the summer. “It was a major renovations and everything went smoothly, considering the scope of the project, and I’m confident that a job like this” will go the same route.

Flecker said Hamilton Hunter Builders Inc. will start within the next couple of weeks pending material need time. They’ll do some work during the school year, but will do the bulk during the summer.

The estimated completion date is July 31.
