Editor, Times-Union: Sustainability means meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Water is the most precious of natural resources. We use it like it will always be there in the same quality and quantity. Water is actually wasted by many people.
Now, we have a large industry, on Ind. 15, just south of CR 700, using a lot of water, day and night. Add to that a proposal for two swine CAFOS, just north of CR 900. They have not given an actual gallon amount to raise the 9,240 hogs, but there is a general table that says it takes 25 gallons of water for one pound of wheat and 2,500 gallons for one pound of meat. You do the math. That is a lot of water.
Besides this amount of water to grow the hogs, an additional 80,000 gallons is needed to clean the area where the hogs were housed until they are taken for slaughter. This is for both CAFOS. Do we have this kind of water to just waste, in one area? Will our aquifer be compromised?
