NORTH WEBSTER - According to Greg Gear, project manager for North Webster Maintenance Department, the normal range of water that travels through the treatment plant runs between 350,000 to 440,000 gallons.
During the recent rain that the area had, the plant, at one point, was running at 990,000 gallons - with a million gallon capacity.
The water has created a plethora of obstacles for the department. At one point, the north lift station was beneath the water, making the pumps submerged.
Sixty percent of the infiltration problem is caused by Epworth Forest, but Gear and his department are monitoring all current issues. Crystal Flash has tied into the storm water system, but not the treatment plant. The state and Gear will continue to watch it.
Webster Lake Conservation Association has applied for a stimulus package from the state for a water improvement program. They are waiting to hear whether or not they will benefit monetarily from the package.
The North Webster Town Board Tuesday approved the purchase of a Ford 350 complete with service package from Rice Ford for $34,808. The vehicle will far better serve the needs of the maintenance department than the current vehicle, the board was told.
North Webster is still participating in the state-funded Operation Pull-Over. Having a higher visibility of police vehicles has lessened some criminal incidents. Town Marshal Greg Church gave his report which indicated as such. The report included 268 calls of service, which included no batteries, five drug-related, six theft/conversion/fraud, 80 traffic related.
Church said he and his department are going to start giving notices to people who have abandoned and junk vehicles within the city limits. Included in this sweep will be vehicles with expired plates.
The North Webster/St. Jude Bike Ride is scheduled for June 6 at 7:30 a.m. Registration fee is $25 per family or $15 for an individual. The route lengths are 12, 25 and 55 miles. Free t-shirts will be given out for the first 30 people to register. Pre-register at www.northwebster.com
The board approved Ben Johnson's Eagle Scout community project. Johnson will clean up the Tippecanoe Township North Webster Cemetery. The five areas that Johnson will concentrate on will be clearing debris, removing the old fence and posts, trimming tree branches, raking the entire cemetery and repainting the curbs yellow.
Church agreed to call the state to make sure that painting the curbs is permissible.
The dates scheduled for the cleanup are April 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
