Kosciusko County taxpayers may be grinning a little more in 1999.

Eikenberry said the tax rate for Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District for 1999 will be $.0087. The 1998 rate was $.01013. She said the KCSWMD is anticipating receiving $70,084 in tax dollars during 1999, with the total budget at $263,350. They are currently $416,791 under the maximum levy.

"That's running a tight ship, tightening our belts," board member Brad Jackson said.

Eikenberry also reported on the mercury collection held Oct. 17. She said they took in six containers of elemental mercury weighing approximately 75 pounds. KCSWMD also took in several cans of pre-1990 paint, 40 fluorescent bulbs, one thermostat, a mercury switch and a large outdoor thermometer along with a few small bags of household batteries.

Also collected was 17.36 tons of residential mixed paper.

"A couple of them said they were so happy they could finally get rid of it," Eikenberry said.

In final business, Eikenberry told the board that Superior Excavating has agreed to allow residents to drop off Christmas trees during the two-week period after Christmas Monday through Friday during normal business hours. There will be no charge to the public to drop off trees.
