The figures for recycling in Kosciusko County in 1998 were released Thursday by the county's Solid Waste Management District.

The volume of weight rose this year but the price sharply declined. The biggest decline was seen in cardboard, which saw a loss of approximately 70 percent of its market value. Mixed plastic lost about 50 percent of its value, according to information released by KCSWMD Director Marsha Eikenberry.

July had the most total weight received, with 280,475 pounds. The least amount of recycling goods was received in February, with a weight of 190,630 pounds, according to Eikenberry's information released.

The total weight for recycling goods in Kosciusko County for a 10-month period was 2,299,958 pounds.

In other recycling news, Eikenberry said the response to the shoe recycling collection event at North Webster School, Syracuse Elementary, Milford and Atwood was tremendous. Syracuse Elementary collected 386 pounds of shoes. North Webster had approximately three to four times that amount. Milford had an amount similar to North Webster. Atwood had just a few shoes.

Shoes were picked up and delivered to the district office. Inmates from the county jail sorted and paired shoes and prepared them for pick-up. The shoes were picked up by the Northeast Solid Waste District, where they will be weighed and forwarded to textile brokers.
