Waste District Reduces Tax Rate

Posted

Property owners will see a slight decrease in their property tax rate next year.

The Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District will reduce their tax rate from last year from 0.013 to 0.01. Marsha Eikenberry, director of the SWMD, said the rate may be reduced even lower.

The tax rate of 0.01 represents one cent per $100 of assessed evaluation.

"I'd like to see it go as low as it can safely go," board member Brad Jackson said in approving the rate.

The SWMD board approved the reduction. Eikenberry will propose the tax rate reduction when she meets with the state board of accounts in the coming weeks.

In other business, the board discussed the SWMD insurance. The board said the cost for the insurance was high and Eikenberry needs to sit down with the insurance agent and check into the situation. It was suggested that some of the insurance may not be necessary or may be repetitive.

"Make sure these things really are necessary," SWMD city board member Eddie Creighton said.

In her director's report, Eikenberry also announced some upcoming events.

America Recycles Day will be celebrated in the county on Nov. 14.

The mercury collection and Paper Recycling Day will be Saturday at Lewis Salvage from 8 a.m. to noon.
