Waste District Moves Into New Offices

Posted

Now there is a room for everything and room enough for all the things.

The Solid Waste Management District staff of two, director Sue Studebaker and educator Rachel Brandenburg, have moved offices from downtown Warsaw to a few blocks away in a building on Union Street.

In October the facility will become a permanent recyclable materials collection point.

"We're so happy to be here," Studebaker said of the long-anticipated move.

Rooms are being organized for education and information purposes and the final renovations are under way.

The shift occurred a couple of weeks ago with the assistance of Kosciusko County jail trusties.

The new facility has a drive-through area where residents will be able to drop off household hazardous waste - paint cans, batteries, cleaners and the like - out of the weather when a schedule is set in October.

Regular electronics collections also will be scheduled this fall.

A separate storage building will be constructed to store these items.

A block building sits on the "front" of the property with a Quonset hut on the west side currently used by Stafford Waste.

Renamed the KC Recycling Depot, the 220 S. Union St. facility has the same telephone number as the Center Street office, 372-3087.

A community open house is set for Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Solid waste board members and members of the citizens advisory committee will tour the facility prior to a 1 p.m. board meeting Sept. 12.

The property cost $200,000 and is funded through a bond issue.

The district sponsors a dozen collection stations throughout the county: in North Webster on the west side of Lance's New Market parking lot; in Syracuse behind Syracuse Rubber; in Milford on the south side of town, west of Ind. 15; in Leesburg on the south side of town on the east side of Ind. 15; in Etna Green on the west of Ind. 19 next to the railroad tracks; in Mentone in the town hall parking lot; in Silver Lake on the south side of town, one block west of Ind. 15; in Claypool near the grain elevator; in Winona Lake at the Winona Lake Street Department, 1631 Chestnut St.; and three locations in Warsaw - on the south side of the Marsh Supermarket parking lot; on Cleveland Street, south of Market Street; and on the northeast side of the Big Lots parking lot.

The stations take newspaper, mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, #1 and #2 plastics, steel cans and aluminum cans.
