Waste District May Increase Tipping Fees

Posted

The Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District is discussing the possibility of raising tipping fees.

The district is attempting to discourage shipments of refuse from outside its boundaries.

Ron Cassidente, attorney for the SWMD, told the board that it could raise the fees only if it defined them as "differential fees based on whether the waste was originated from the county."

Brad Jackson, Kosciusko County commissioner, indicated that the higher amount of revenue that would come into the county could possibly translate to a savings in property taxes. He admitted that the amount would not be substantial but that nowadays any savings achievable would be good.

Jackson hinted that they would seek the top fee possible but there has been no action on the proposal yet. Presently the maximum fee is $2 per ton.
